Government Overview

Montreat operates under a Mayor-Council form of government.  The Board of Commissioners (also referred to as the Town Council) consists of the Mayor and five Commissioners and appoints a Town Administrator to oversee the Town's day-to-day operations.  Elections for the Mayor and Commissioners are held each November as their four-year staggered terms expire.  These elections are non-partisan.  The Board is also assisted by a Planning and Zoning Commission, Zoning Board of Adjustment and several other advisory committees.

The Board of Commissioners holds an Agenda Meeting on the first Thursday of each month and a Town Council Meeting on the second Thursday of each month.  Both meetings are held at 7:00 p.m. and take place in the Walkup Building, 300 Community Center Circle unless otherwise announced. The Board also holds an annual Retreat in March of each year and schedules special or workshop meetings as needed.  Action may be taken at any of these meetings, although it is normally reserved for Town Council Meetings. 

All meetings of the Board of Commissioners are open to the public, except for matters discussed in Closed Session pursuant to N.C.G.S. 143-318(11).
